AVC finalises 2011 volleyball calendar

Beijing, China, February 16, 2011 – The sports events council of the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) confirmed its competition calendar for 2011 during a two-day meeting which concluded in Beijing on Wednesday.

The most important events of the year are the AVC Senior Volleyball Championships, with the women's edition taking place in Chinese Taipei from September 15-23, and the men's following immediately afterwards in Tehran, Iran between September 26 and October 6.

The AVC Women's Championship, which also doubles as a qualification tournament for the 2011 World Cup and 2012 World Grand Prix, has drawn a total of 16 teams, two more than for the last edition in 2009 in Hanoi, Vietnam. The participating nations are Australia, China, Chinese Taipei, DPR Korea, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

The winners (and potentially the runners-up*) will join hosts Japan in taking part in the World Cup in November. The top four teams will qualify for the World Grand Prix, meanwhile, with the side ranked fifth entering a play-off with Africa's continental champions with a further ticket at stake.

There will be 18 teams involved in the AVC Men's Senior Championship – the list comprises Afghanistan, Australia, China, Chinese Taipei, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Lebanon, Pakistan, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and UAE. As with the women's edition, the winners (and potentially runners-up*) will qualify for the World Cup with hosts Japan.

This year also brings the AVC Club Volleyball Championships. Twelve teams will take part in the Men's Club Championship scheduled from July 23-31 in Palembang, Indonesia. The Women's Club Championship, to be held in Vinh Phuc, Vietnam from June 18-26, features eight teams.

At the AVC sports events council meeting, the China Volleyball Federation expressed its strong interest in hosting the first height-limitation volleyball championships in October. The council will make a final decision after soliciting opinions from national federations.

Other confirmed competitions for 2011 include the 26th Southeastern Asian Games from November 11-23 in Indonesia; the 23rd Asian Men's Pacific Cup from June 17-19 in Fukuoka, Japan; the 8th VTV Cup Women's Volleyball Invitation in July in Vietnam; and the volleyball tournament at the World University Games from August 12-22 in Shenzheng, China.

* Four 2011 continental vice champions will qualify for the 2011 World Cup in accordance with the FIVB World Rankings.
